Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth(SPIC MACAY) is a voluntary youth movement, which was established in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Seth at IIT Delhi. It seeks to foster the exchange of traditional Indian values to generate awareness of the cultural traditions and heritage of India. SPIC MACAY SVNIT chapter is managed by a group of students who volunteer selflessly to promote Indian classical music, Indian classical dance, and other aspects of Indian culture by organizing various cultural events which include concerts, art & craft workshops, lectures, demonstrations, informal discussions, and seminars. The idea is to expose the students to the larger perspective of our heritage.
Following is a description of events conducted by SPIC MACAY SVNIT:
Through SPIC MACAY I got to learn various aspects of “Bharatiya Sanskruti and Sangeet”, but I believe that the most valuable asset I had is that, “I got my present life, and the present me”, because of SPIC MACAY. SPIC MACAY has now become an integral part of my life, a part where I only keep on investing my time, without expecting anything in return. Experiencing such a state of selflessness has gifted me with various values to cherish for a lifetime.
-ADVAIT AVADHANE (Alumni- Batch 2019, SVNIT)
As a volunteer for SPIC MACAY, I learnt many things throughout the journey which shaped me as an individual today. I would like to say to people who are new to classical music and dance, give it a try, I am sure you will love it. I was lucky to get the chance to attend various International Conventions of SPIC MACAY at prestigious institutions of India including IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and JNU where I worked with volunteers from all over India, and had a fruitful experience. The happiness you receive when you see the youth of our country enjoying our culture is really a very pure feeling. Do join this movement, and come closer to our roots.
-ROHITASHV SHARMA (Alumni- Batch 2020, SVNIT)
The years spent in SPIC MACAY have been upmost enriching with a deep sense of content that arises with the fulfillment of your responsibility towards the community and your own character building. The events and interaction with the artists ignite interest among the audience and witnessing it is exactly what makes this service worth every effort.
-NANDINI UPADHYAY (Alumni- Batch 2020, SVNIT)
My experience with SPIC MACAY has been one of the most beautiful journeys of my college life, as I graduated from college, I am sure that I will always continue to volunteer for SPIC MACAY no matter where I am. As a volunteer, I got to learn important values and lessons, and most importantly embark on an inner journey, the journey of discovering our rich Indian culture. And as I did so, I realized how important it is for each and every child of this country to get exposed to it.
-RADHIKA MATHURIA (Alumni- Batch 2021, SVNIT)
My journey with SPIC MACAY started from a very early age. My father has performed as a tabla artist at many SPIC MACAY events in Ahmedabad. In this way, I got a chance to witness some of the most fascinating performances and its effect on the audience. So, upon getting a chance to join SPIC MACAY SVNIT, it was a thing I could not resist. Through SPIC MACAY, I had the chance to interact with several world renowned artistes, to volunteer in managing the concerts taking place, to work with a team which has some of the best people I met and most importantly, working towards spreading the reach of Indian Classical Music among today’s youth.
-SWASTIK BHATTACHARYA (Alumni- Batch 2021, SVNIT)
I was introduced to SPIC MACAY during my first year in SVNIT. I enrolled my name since I was very interested in classical music. I attended the international conventions held in the year 2018 and 2019, which gave me an opportunity to witness varied art forms (both classical and folk) spread across the country. There, I was introduced to Koodiyattam which is an ancient and rare theatrical art form from Kerala (which was new to me as well). The ‘VIRASAT’ series held at SVNIT, led not only me but all the people involved, through an unforgettable experience. I would like to say that SPIC MACAY provides us a newfound experience and an insight of music.
