About Department

The Civil Engineering Department is one of the founding departments of the Institute. The vision of the department is to become a global center of excellence for creating competent civil engineering professionals. The department has grown tremendously over the years, especially after the conversion of the institute to an NIT, and is now one of the best Civil Engineering Departments among NITs in the country. At present the department has 26 permanent full-time faculty members and more are expected to join soon. The faculty are well trained in the best institutes of the country, and provide high quality teaching and research. The B.Tech. programme of the department is run along with the Department of Applied Mechanics Department which has 17 faculty members.

The activities of the department are carried out under four different sections namely, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Planning & Engineering, Urban Planning and Water Resources Engineering, and the department runs four M.Tech. programmes in these specializations. The department has all the essential laboratory facilities to carry out basic research in these areas. At present more than 100 students including 50 full-time students are working for their PhD in the department.

In addition to the regular academic activities, the department also undertakes outreach activities for teachers of the colleges and professionals in industries. Regular short-terms programmes are arranged in different specialized areas to suit the requirements of the professionals. Research activities undertaken by the faculty and students of the department supported by various governmental agencies primarily focus on applied research. The department also helps the industries/agencies to find solution to their problems.

Students of the department with their diversified culture/background are in the forefront of acquiring professional and technical knowledge. They conduct various technical and non-technical events under Civil Engineering Society. The students regularly receive many awards/fellowships from governmental and non-governmental agencies.

The reputation of an institute/department primarily depends on the research and development activities it undertakes and the training it provides to its students. We plan to introduce more post-graduate programmes and set up advanced laboratories in specialized areas. We look forward to our alumni and the industry to help us in this by their interaction, co-operation and support.

About Sections
M. Tech. in Water Resources Engineering course started as Part-time M.E (Water Engineering) course in 1987 and Converted into Full Time M. Tech. Water Resources from year 2002-03. WRE section has nine Faculties (All are Ph. D.) with expertise in different areas of Water resources like Flood management, Sediment Transport, Ground Water Recharge, Water distribution system, Climate Change as well as the application of Geospatial Technology, Fuzzy Theory etc. to solve the problems of WRE. The section has four Laboratories viz.: 1. Water resources Laboratory 2. Geospatial Technology Laboratory 3. Computational Hydraulics Laboratory 4. Advanced Hydraulic Laboratory Following are the main activities of the PG Section:  Conducting teaching programme of M. Tech (Water Resources Engineering) and Ph.D.  Center of excellence in Water Resources Engineering and flood management  Providing the necessary guidance to students for preparing Seminars, Professional Projects and Dissertation Thesis.  Conducting Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, Summer / Winter Schools.  Providing testing and consultancy services in the field of Water Resources Engineering.  Participation in the development of the Institute.  Promote students to participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities at inter-institutional and inter-departmental levels.
The Environmental Engineering Section of the Department is one of the oldest sections of the Department running a full time PG course in Environmental Engineering since 1972. The section has well trained and experienced full time professors who impart the technical knowledge of Environmental Engineering to the UG and PG students of the department. The section has produced a number of post graduate students who are well placed in academics, government organizations and some are well practicing Environmental consultants. The section has well equipped UG and PG laboratories to train the students for their curriculum based experimental studies. The laboratory is also recognized by the Government of Gujarat for carrying out the Environmental Audit work for Schedule – I type of industries. Quality of work is never compromised by the section in order to earn more revenue. Routine water and wastewater testing is also done on regular basis in Environmental Laboratory. Section is doing a work for many project of Surat municipal corporation (SMC). The section is also actively involved in a number of research projects sanctioned through organizations like DST and BRNS. Many full time and part time research scholars are pursuing research in the section which will lead them to a Ph.D. degree, under the guidance of well-trained faculty members. Various industrial and environmental management issues are touched upon in the research studies. To give a practical exposure to the students in the field, site visits are organized. Also experts are invited to deliver expert lectures to the group of students, which also gives them a view of the development and practices ongoing in field. The faculty members also have a good number of publications in International well reputed Journals and also have authored few books which are successfully running at National level. The course curriculum is revised regularly by conducting workshops wherein faculty members from reputed IITs and NITs share their valuable opinion. The curriculum is designed based on the current need of the industry and society.
PG in Urban Planning which was started in 1987 is one of the oldest section in Civil Engineering Department of SVNIT, Surat. It aims to educate the students in high level knowledge acceptable at international level enabling them to face field problems of urban and regional planning. With the intention to acknowledge the vision statement of the institute of disseminating globally acceptable education, this course is delivered using flexible teaching methods comprising studios, tutorials, theory and intensive field visits. To meet professional requirements, students are exposed to knowledge for practical perception of the techniques, applied in planning research. Courses involved in curriculum are: Urban Planning Theory & Techniques, Urban Housing, Research Methodology, Sustainable Environmental planning, Innovation in urban infrastructure planning, Governance & management and Professional Project. Apart from this the section also offers Ph.D for students. The section contributes sizable number of publications in recognized journals. The various facilities provided are Urban studio, Seminar room, Cartography lab, Informatics lab, Green Infrastructure lab etc.. The area of decision‐making is made stronger by the use of various software applications like ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Envi, City Engine etc. Urban planning section is active in offering consultancy services in the field of development, master, regional & rural plans based on GIS applications along with planning and designing of smart as well as green urban infrastructure that includes scrutiny for all urban projects to various government, semi-government, corporate and private sectors through erudite faculty. Also, the faculty members are on panel of different planning authorities. The section is recognized by national professional body Institute of Town Planners of India (ITPI).
The Transportation Engineering and Planning (TEP) section (Civil Engineering Department SVNIT Surat) is actively involved in teaching, research and consultancy. Currently, 18 PhD scholars are pursuing doctoral studies and about 40 M. Tech. students are pursuing their masters’ degree in Transportation Engineering. The faculties in the section are actively involved in teaching, research and consultancy activities. The faculty members in the section are actively worked and pursuing research on the sponsored R & D projects of worth over Rs. 300 lakhs. The research projects are sponsored by CSIR-CRRI, DST, and MoUHA, Govt of India. The faculties in the section have published more than 50 research articles in very premier journals such as Transportation Research Part A, Journal of Transportation Engineering-Part A, Transportation Letters, Transportation Research Record, Safety Science, Sustainable Cities and Society, Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems, ITE Journal of ITS, etc. Faculties have also presented their research papers at very prestigious conferences as Transportation Research Board (TRB), Euro Working Group on Transportation, TRG India, EASTS , Traffic Granular Flow, etc. Consultancy works of worth more than Rs. 400 lakhs are being handled by the section. The faculties in the section are working as members of the ‘State Technical Agency’ for PMGSY activities in Gujarat State. The faculty members in the section have published their papers in various reputed International and National referred journals. The section has a very active association with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoUHA), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), CSIR- Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), Indian Roads Congress (IRC), etc. The section is having well equipped laboratories and software such as TRANSCAD, CUBE, VISSIM, HDM-IV, etc. The section faculties has immensely contributed in conducting training programs on “Road Safety Engineering Measures” and “Road Safety Audit” for PWD and Panchayat Engineers sponsored by Asian Institute of Transport Development, Government of India and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Other popular events such as GiAN course, conference, named Recent Advances in Traffic Engineering are also conducted at TEP section. Overall, TEP section is extremely active through significantly intensive collaborations with foreign universities such as UNCC Charlotte, USA, QUT, Brisbane Australia and IITs including industries such as 3M, WSP, ARCADIS, Qowi International, etc. The students from TEP section are well placed in industry as well as pursuing research in premier Indian Institutes. Overall, the growth of TEP section is well witnessed by many researchers, experts and well-wishers from India and abroad.
