About Us
•The department of Applied Mechanics is the backbone of Civil Engineering Programme. It is an independently functioning department, dedicated to the specialized areas of Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.

•The basic courses of Engineering Mechanics and Mechanics of Solids are offered to the undergraduate students of all the branches of engineering. The subjects offered to the undergraduate students of Civil Engineering are, Structural Analysis, Structural Design, Geotechnical Engineering, electives in advanced course of analysis and design. The seminars and design projects in the relevant areas of applications to industry and research are the highlights of the department activity.

•The department takes pride in pioneering post graduate course in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering, since 1973 and 1974 respectively. These courses are approved by AICTE and have been earlier accreditated with ‘A’ grade awarded by NBA, New Delhi.

•Our post graduate alumni are serving at various national level organizations and some have been successful entrepreneurs in the fields of geotechnical and structural engineering. The department toasts of dedicated team of 22 faculty members. More than 12 faculty members have teaching experience ranging from 23 years to 38 years. The group of seven doctorate professors are supervising other faculty members to achieve Ph.D. during upcoming years.

•The department has well equipped laboratories to conduct experiments at undergraduate, post graduate and research levels. These laboratories are (i) Computer Lab (ii) Strength of Material Laboratory (iii) Dynamics Laboratory (iv) Concrete laboratory (v) Engineering Mechanics Laboratory (vi) Heavy Structure Laboratory (vii) Presetressed Concrete Laboratory (viii) Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory (ix) Structural Analysis laboratory (x) Photo elastic / Experimental Stress Analysis.

•The faculty members are actively engaged in consultancy upgrading their knowledgebase by publishing technical papers, in journals of repute, presenting their work at national and international conferences. Some of the faculty members have been honoured with best paper awards in the past. The total number of published / presented papers has crossed a mark of100 during last year. There are more than 50 research students being supervised for their Ph.D. work by the department faculty. 14 research students have been conferred with Ph.D. since last 12 years, after the department is involved with research leading to Ph.D. degree.

•The testing of engineering materials including soil exploration has been one of the highly appreciated activities of the department since 1969. The challenging consultancy work including design proof checking trouble shooting, third party inspection and condition assessment, has made the faculty and staff to contribute to the state-of-art work to the industry and society. The total figure of testing and consultancy has exceeded one corer during last financial years.

•Apart from above mentioned activities, the department has the unique distinction of organizing national conferences, seminars and short term training programmes for the enhancement of faculty members in the western region. More than five national level conferences, over 20 short term training programmes have been conducted during the recent past.

•The faculty members of the department have also been shaping the development of the institute by shouldering responsibilities as Hostel wardens, Professor In-charge of various activities, Deans and Institute level committees, to name a few.

•Overall, the department of Applied Mechanics presents a picture of a small but fully dedicated and devoted faculty contributing to the all round growth of students, institute, industry and society.
